Awards vary with each edition and have ranged from a US$90,000 prize pool to a three-month $15,000 PR contract to the winner from PR for Artists based in Los Angeles. For its sixth edition which opened on February 15, the Boynes Emerging Artist Award has teamed up with NoceFresca, a residency that caters to artists, designers, writers and creative nomads across the globe, to offer a fully-funded three-month artist residency in Sardinia, Italy.

The Boynes Emerging Artist Award was born in the middle of the night in October 2019 while Boynes was applying for another award…This year, however, Boynes is offering a prize she said she is most excited about. Boynes has partnered with Italian artist Francesca Sassu whose organisation Nocefresca runs a year-round residency programme in Sardinia….


Competitions play a vital role in the world of fine art. In an industry where professional recognition is invaluable, the chance to have work judged and appreciated by experienced panelists can be an important opportunity.

For emerging artists, however, the benefits of an award win often cannot outweigh the barriers to entry. Hefty application fees and anxiety about who will actually be judging their art can be stressful obstacles.
